Charging excess for baggage within weight limits
I flew Lufthansa between Mumbai and Basel. There was no mention of any baggage allowance on my ticket. On the forward journey, I was allowed to check in two bags, both of which together weighed less than 23 kgs. After a two-week vacation, I came to the Basel airport for the return journey with the same two bags, well within 23 kgs, and the person at the check in counter told me that I would be allowed to check in only one bag, and that I would have to pay 180 Swiss francs if I wished to carry the other as well.
I tried to reason with him saying that I was allowed to bring the same bags on the forward journey, and that the bags were within the weight limit. But they refused to even listen to me, and instead said that "maybe I got lucky at the Mumbai airport." I was forced to cough up the money if I wanted to get my boarding pass.
Back home, I complained to Lufthansa, and their priceless reply to my request to refund the money is "it was a goodwill gesture at the Mumbai airport to allow you to check in two bags".
This is completely unacceptable and amounts to cheating and extortion. It was never mentioned to me at the Mumbai airport that I was allowed only one bag and that they were allowing me to carry two as a "goodwill gesture".
Lufthansa has found a great way to make money off passengers - lull them into believing they can carry two bags on the forward journey, and slam them with high fees on the return journey so they are forced to pay up.
What horrible, horrible people!
