Default bait and switch

I had a return flight ticket on American Airlines but needed to extend my stay so I was told to just not show for the return flight but buy a one way ticket for the date I wanted and I would simply be credited for the unused ticket. I did that. When I went to retrieve my credit I was told that there was a $200 "exchange fee" which wiped out my unused ticket credit!!! This is a true ripoff!!!!!
