Default misrepresentation during booking

I am a Brazilian resident, and purchased some months ago my ticket online for the following trip: GRU/JFK/MIA/ATL/GRU. While in New York, I had to change my itinerary and fly straight back home (Sao Paulo). During checkin at JFK, I was told that my bag was overweight and that I had to pay excess weight in the amount of $150. My bag was 64 LBS. I replied that that was not the case, as I had purchased my ticket in Brazil, and as per regulations, I was allowed 75 LBS per bag, instead of the 50 LBS per gag had I purchased my ticket in the US. I explained to the ticket agent that I am a Brazilan resident, that I purchased my ticket in Sao Paulo, that I began my trip in Sao Paulo... all to no avail. She said that their system shows that the ticket was purchased in the US, whereas I repeated that it was purchased in Brazil, and I asked to speak to her supervisor. The supervisor in a very disrespectful way repeated what the agent said and informed me that if the ticket is purchased online, then its the same as if purchased in the US. I did complain to the airline requesting a refund, but so far I have not heard from them.
If in fact its true that if a ticket is purchased online its the same as if purchasing it in the US, then Delta (as well as any other airline) should NOT sell online to overseas residents, or at the very least put a disclaimer that states that at the time of booking.
Sincerely,
Rahmo Nehmad
Sao Pualo, Brazil

When you say you purchased your ticket online was it at www.Delta.com?

When you go to any US airline's website you will automatically default to the US website and any purchase you make will be in US Dollars and considered a purchase made in the US. If you are purchasing a ticket and are located in another country you need to switch to the country specific version of the website.

On Delta.com the link is on the top of the page. When you click on "Country/Language" you will receive a drop-down menu which will let you select your country of origin and preferred language. If you do not complete this step you will be purchasing your ticket in US Dollars and all restrictions to a ticket purchased in the US will apply. After you are logged into the country-specific website all fares will be quoted in your local currency and will be considered as purchased in your country of residence.

As it happens, tried to purchase a ticket on United.com for a trip from Chicago to Asheville, and it would not allow me to purchase a ticket from the UK. I did not use any drop down menu or put my residence in until I was well advanced in the booking. The pop up screen stated that I was not allowed to purchase the ticket using a credit card registered outside the US and directed me to the UK based website. Naturally when I got to the website, the UK price for the exact same flight was nearly $280 more for the round trip.

Delta I am sure could detect that the IP address was outside of the US. They are simply doing what Delta does best...ripping off it's customers with impunity.
