Default Baggage is Baggage

So, my wife leaves Atlanta and places her bag in the over head compartment. Spends 5 days in Austin TX. Go's to the Austin airport knowing that she not going to check the bag. Gets to the ticket counter and is informed that the bag is to large????? Ok Why not just gate check the bag and be done?? No they made her rebook and charged her for it??? Is this a case of picking on a little Woman for money?? When calling there so called customer help line Mr. Lewis said its an airport issue and he could'nt help. What sense dose this make???? I find this type of behaviour. You know what I mean????? I will never fly this airline ever again nor will my wife. Heres the really bad part. I have Delta emploees that live all around me.

Was it the same aircraft type both ways? If it was a different aircraft for the return trip then perhaps the bins were smaller and the bag wouldn't have fit.

I also feel this is one of those "were not getting the whole story" stories. Why when it was simply a matter of checking vs. carrying on a bag was she required to re-book? Wouldn't they have simply charged her the checked bag fee?

I'm going to agree. If there was an issue with the size of the bag, and he's saying she had to go on a later flight, sounds like she was there past the bag cutoff time, in which case they would have given her the option of a voluntary separation, meaning that he bag probably would not make the flight with her and she would have to pick it up in Atlanta after it did arrive. I'm betting that she made a stink, something along the lines of "I'm not coming back to the airport"......so the only other option is fly later with the bag.

Also, gate checking would be an option.

I'm not sure I understand this entirely, but I am glad they actually made someone check a piece of luggage that was too big. Why do people even go to the plane with something too big, or multiple bags? I'm tired of the airlines doing nothing about it. I am tired of having to put my "legal size" carry-on at my feet, because rude people bring more than they are supposed to, and put it all in the overhead space. I usually book my flights early, and used to always book them near the front of the plane. I now book them further back, because many times the overhead bins are full before the front of the plane gets to load. I have watched people go on the plane with huge bags, or 3-4 items, and nothing is said. I watched one man fill up an entire overhead bin by himself. There is no way I am checking MY bag, when I only have one, and it is legal, because I do not expect to have anything of value in it when I reach my destination, and I SHOULDN"T HAVE TO. If the rules are enforced, I should have a space for my bag. Delta has been one of the worsst for this, and is one of the reasons I no longer fly with Delta. At least in this case, I agree with the airlines.
