To avoid at all costs: American Airlines codeshare with JAL..... for example

American claimed they were not responsible for booking seats on JAL via their website, and as a result we were allocated the least desirable seats on the plane, with no opportunity to register a request otherwise. We are 2 passengers travelling together and booked well in advance. American Airlines wouldn't even entertain a request for upgrade/change in seats, alleging that only Japan Airlines could make this change. Yet upon contacting JAL we found out that the two separate seats (middle seats, different rows) were requested by American Airlines, presumably to save costs. We have asked for redress, but considering cancelling this reservation and booking via a competitor due to the time we wasted and terrible service. It is probably worth paying little more to avoid such a waste of time and horrible service. Go to a competitor and avoid this flight.
