Angry Hig Fees for Changing a Flight

I had to cancel a flight I had to NYC over Thanksgiving, on Delta, because my house flooded the morning I was supposed to fly out. I had to move out of my house, and take care of that mess. I called Delta to tell them. They said there would be a $150 cancellation fee. This was an emergency I had no control over and could prove it. I had flown Southwest airlines before. They don't charge anything to change your flight or for baggage. I think the cancellation charge was way too high! Southwest, now, has flights to NYC out of my airport. I will fly Southwest that from now on when I can.
Delta charges high fees for baggage and changing your flight.

The $150 is a fee to cover the loss that Delta incurs for holding a seat for you, which you ended up not using; i.e. we could have sold that seat to someone else. Why is it not fair to keep a piece of the ticket when we have held our end of the deal? (reserving a seat for you from the day you booked it)

It's unfortunate that this happened to you and I'm sure they are sympathetic, but this event doesn't justify Delta to not charge you the fee, it's just part of what comes along with the pain of having a basement overflow.

Yeah, and the result of the gouging of fees and exploitation of your passengers is that this passenger has switched to another carrier who doesn't do it. Sadly, this is not enough to control the outrageous conduct of Delta. Delta abused it's passengers so much, it went bankrupt. The government promptly rescued it, and after it had screwed over its suppliers, employees and customers, gave it anti-trust immunity to buy Northwest and it promptly emerged even more dominant in it's core markets as the largest air carrier in the world. Of course, this had nothing to do with the large sums of money Delta paid to politicians through lobbyists... this carrier should have been allowed to go under. It is abusive to its passengers and has a hostile, anti-consumer attitude.
