Default Expedia sucks

I bought a ticket from NYC to Kiev from expedia for May29th. A week after I purchased the ticket they come back to me and tell me that the flight is changed to May28th as the original flight had been cancelled.
Now, I am not from NYC and had booked anothr ticket from my hometown of Columbus to NYC for May29th. I had to rebook that flight, lost a day worth of wages, have to pay for exta hotel day in Kiev and spent hours trying to convince Expedia to help me get another flight out on May29th.

EXPEDIA were of no help. They tell me that they are just ticket sellers and that i should contact airline, Airline tells me that they did not sell the ticket to me and that EXPEDIA should be liable.

Not sure how to get justice and hopefully my money back but it has been very bitter experience.

You will probably have to speak to a superviror at Expedia. Most airlines will refund a ticket if they have an unacceptable schedule change. In this case, a day prior to your original travel date could certainly be considered unacceptable. You might look on the airlines website for their "contract of carriage". It probably gives details about how they handle schedule changes.
Then, you'll have some concrete evidence if Expedia gives you a hard time.

The airlie will refund the original price of the ticket;
Since the date of travel now is much closer, the fares are atleast 5times higher for the date that i originally wanted to travel.. Also, the carrier in question has another flight for May29th but that is in partnership. They will not entertain any questions if the tikcet is purchased from agent which is Expedia in this case. Expedia gives me a scripted answer: we can refund the original sale price or you fly on the changed schedule.
